NC\u2019s were in our shop in the 60\u2032s-long before most of the industry had even heard of them, let along the average person on the street. Seems it wasn\u2019t that long ago that \u201cCNC-machined parts\u201d caught on as a buzzword.<\/p>\n<p>So as of late, we\u2019ve taken another step ahead of the pack from 3 axis to 5 axis milling.<\/p>\n<p>So what\u2019s the big deal? That\u2019s what we\u00a0<em>used<\/em>\u00a0to say.<\/p>\n<p>Almost anything you can do on a 5 axis mill can be done on a 3 axis mill with a little ingenuity. It\u2019s just that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>on a 5 axis, it takes less operations to do it<\/li>\n<li>on a 5 axis, it take less time. less operations mean less setup time<\/li>\n<li>on a 5 axis, it\u2019s more\u00a0accurate. less operations mean more\u00a0re-fixturing.\u00a0if you can avoid re-fixturing<\/li>\n<li>on a 5 axis, it\u2019s more efficient. less setups mean less chance of scrap<\/li>\n<li>on a 5 axis, it\u2019s more consistent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So hour for hour, yes 5 axis is more expensive. But if it takes less time on a 5 axis mill than a 3 axis one, with better accuracy, better consistency, and less scrap, the value and benefit are indisputable.<\/p>\n<p>Not every part needs 5 axis treatment.
